All I can really do is state how I feel about it based on my own experience and expectations. So here goes.
This TV has a lovely display. It is clear, bright and high contrast. It is a fabulous "television."
If you are the average consumer who brings home a TV, plugs in your cable box, then never uses it for anything other than to consume ad supported network television, this television is ideal for you.
If, on the other hand, you bought this television as a "smart" television, you could make better choices for more money. But for what you'll pay for this, last year's model (in 2016), you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal.
About those smart features.
First of all, if you turn on the television and you haven't programmed in any channels, the TV plays fake TV static with the accompanying fake TV static noise on a one-second infinite loop. TSST TSST TSST TSST. Forever. Until you select a feature with the remote. This is not only unnecessary, it's extremely annoying. My tube TV in the 1990s had a blue screen when there was no signal received. Every TV I've ever owned had a blue screen when there was no signal received. I was fine with that. Having to mute the TV while I select an app from the menu, then unmute it again to use the app is rage inducing after about the third time the Youtube app hangs indefinitely and has to be restarted before it'll play another video.
About that Youtube app.
The Youtube app won't just play a playlist of videos, either on its own or as commanded by Miracast. Typically, it will play between 1 and 3 videos, then the spinning loading symbol comes up and stays there indefinitely. The video is perfectly fine, I can play it on every other device in my possession. But the Youtube app on this television has no timeout on videos it can't play and it has no retry. It tries once, throws up the loading spinner and just sits there with its thumb up its HDMI port going "NOPE SORRY."
Pause doesn't fix it. Skipping to the next video doesn't fix it. Selecting any random video doesn't fix it.
You have to manually quit the Youtube app and open it again before it will play any video. This is with a gigabit ethernet cable connected directly to the network switch (I believe this TV only does 100 mbit however).
As for Miracast: It works pretty well when it works. But for some reason LG decided to name it "Screen Sharing" on the app menu instead of "Miracast," which is the established name for the standard." It took me several hours to realize the television even had miracast capability because its Miracast listener is disabled by default and there was no Miracast option in the menu.
The manual was no help. The manual is 3 pages long and tells you, with pictures and no text, how to plug in the power cord and turn the TV on with the remote. That's it. And I guess that's fine, because the average consumer who is buying a television in 2016 has about that level of comprehension and that attention span.
Okay, now that my minor rant is done, here's a like/dislike list:
Like:
* Huge display for cheap, basically a big computer monitor for 1/8th the price of an actual 50" computer monitor
* Sound is extremely good for internal TV speakers (turn on cinema sound mode for room filling audio)
* Only about 45 lbs for a 50" display is remarkable - doesn't need a special stand
* The remote is acceptably responsive, especially for a infrared remote.
* The brightness always seems to be right. It's not overwhelming in a dark room.
Dislike:
* There is one IR sensor at the bottom of the TV and the remote's IR transmitter is weak. The remote has to be pointed directly at the bottom of the TV to be used.
* LG has a fecal storm of different apps in the Google Play Store that support different models of television and the only way to figure out if your TV is compatible is to go through a list of dozens of television cryptic model numbers and search for your own.
* The stand feet that go on the bottom of the television are left and right. They could have easily been designed so they were universal.
* Many settings cannot be changed or viewed while a Smart TV app is running.
* Staged updates -- you can't just download the latest software update and call it good. You have to download every update that has ever been released, one at a time. Power the TV off after each update. Power it back on. Then install the next update.
* A couple of times the TV stopped responding to input then powered off after a minute or so. I'm hoping this was just an early firmware glitch.
Overall if you're looking for a 1080p TV that is huge, doesn't weigh too much and is ready to go out of the box, I'd highly recommend this one.
