Getting sick may be part and parcel of growing up, but it does not mean that parents have to completely surrender to these circumstances. There are always ways to boost a child’s immunity levels so that they’re better able to fight of cold, coughs and the flu!

Here are 5 ways to go about it:

Ensure sufficient rest

Sleep deprivation can make anyone more susceptible to illness and children are no exception. Sleep and rest boosts the immune systems and recharges the body for the hard work of fighting off illnesses!

Serve them more fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are rich in immune-boosting nutrients which include phytonutrients such as vitamin C and carotenoids. Phytonutrients are said to increase the body’s production of infection-fighting white blood cells and interferon, an antibody that coats cell surfaces, blocking out viruses.

Teach your kids to pay attention to personal and environmental hygiene.

Keeping themselves and their environment clean will help keep minimal contact with germs and this in turn reduces stress on their immune systems.

Take second-hand smoke seriously

Secondhand smoke increases a child’s risk of bronchitis, ear infections, and asthma. It may also affect intelligence and neurological development. Need we say more?

Exercise

Exercising doesn’t just keep young bodies fit and strong, but it is found to promote the flushing of bacteria out of the lungs and airways and thus may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Exercise as a family to keep kids motivated (and of course, it’s also simply more fun to do things together!)
