Get To Know Your Baby’s Development (From 0-3 Years)

Up close with your precious little one

As a new parent, you’re sure to wonder about your baby and what the months ahead holds for your little one’s development. It will be great to know what to expect so as to better understand why your child acts or behaves the way he does. While a baby will not seem to be able to do much, slowly but surely they will be perfecting all their physical and motor skills and mental capabilities as well. Keep in mind too that babies are keen observers and will mimic you in every way at every chance they get!

Get to know how your baby develops!

Physical

Your baby is getting physically stronger everyday in spite of that small size. A newborn who is at first not aware of his arms, legs and his own strength will come to discover it all as the days go by. A baby will also start perfecting the use of his tiny hands, including the use of his fingers for more than just grasping yours. Your baby will soon start reaching out to grab stuff too!

Speech

Your baby will soon show interest in communicating with you. He will be making all kinds of gurgling and cooing sounds to get your attention and communicate his feelings. Don’t be too surprised to hear an occasional ‘eh’, ‘ah’, ‘oh’ or ‘uh’ from him while he looks your way! If you spend enough time with him, sooner or later junior will start to mimic sounds he hears from you. This will undoubtedly bring junior and you closer!

Sight

Your baby’s vision will be limited for a few weeks. He may not be able to see clearly but may be able to make out blurred images 20-25 centimetres away. A newborn baby is however, capable of sensing his mum or dad’s emotions when he is face to face with them. He might even smile back, much to your surprise! Try moving your face a little to see if he tracks you along with those cute eyes. Your baby will seem to be staring at you, memorizing your features for recognition. That personality seems to shine through that smile, doesn’t it?

Hearing

Your baby will begin to stay awake longer during the day and you can make use of this to stimulate his hearing senses. Your baby can hear his surroundings well and even recognize your voice. Therefore, one splendid way to sharpen his hearing is to sing to the little one!

1-2 Months, Up Close with Your Baby

Speech

Your baby loves to giggle and laugh when you talk to him. Talk more to him and encourage more communication between the two of you. You will find that junior already knows when his name is being called! Singing some classic nursery rhymes every now and then will not only entertain him but help give your precious one a head start in his communication skills.

Hearing

Your little one will start interacting with sounds of the surrounding from now on. Place a rattle nearby or a musical mobile above the crib to stimulate his sense of hearing. You can tell by the way baby moves his little hand and legs in the air that he is listening to the sound and is excited to hear it.

Physical

Baby is getting more skilled by the day and soon starts to reach out to grab things! He is beginning to turn to one side. Keep a close watch for he may try to lift his head up to a 45º angle when placed on his tummy and support his own weight on his elbows. Towards the end of two month, baby will begin to abandon the ‘fetal’ look. Babies this age tend to not respond much to touches.

Sight

Baby’s sight is still limited but he is very keen to observe the surrounding and may be able to focus quite clearly on objects placed nearby. Also, nothing comes close to the joy of your baby staring straight back at you so get close to baby, say about 20-25cm away and watch as he gazes back at you! Help baby track movements by slowly moving objects along in front of him.

Social

Babies love games so spend time with your little bundle and play some baby games with him. Tease and play peek-a-boo with your happy baby. Call out his name often, especially when baby shows signs of wanting to be cuddled and hold baby close to you. All these actions will tighten the bond between baby and you.
