Managing Constipation the “Gentle is Good” Way

Abbott is launching the ‘Gentle is Good’ campaign in Malaysia to improve awareness and combat constipation, a condition that is often overlooked. The initiative aims to encourage people in Malaysia to change attitudes and behaviours that lead to constipation and laxative abuse while advocating gentler alternatives and long-term management of the condition.

“With the ‘Gentle is Good’ campaign, we want to enhance understanding and increase awareness of a common issue that many people face in their daily lives. We believe that better constipation management will help them live healthier lives and do the things they enjoy,” said Abbott’s Regional Medical Manager Dr Priscilla Phua.

Constipation is characterised by bowel movements that are infrequent, difficulty in passing motion which persists for several weeks or longer. To relieve this, many resort to immediate solutions through prescription and non-prescription laxatives rather than osmotic laxatives or dietary fiber, which can help maintain bowel movements and is gentler on the body, and suitable for long term use. In fact, a local study has revealed that almost 50% of Malaysians do not meet the recommended daily fiber intake.

“The cause of constipation often reflects what we eat, and eating the right foods can be highly effective to prevent or relieve constipation,” said Associate Professor Dr Raja Affendi Raja Ali, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, UKM Medical Centre and Vice Chairman, Digestive Health Malaysia. “Fiber is one the most essential food in our diet for the proper functioning of our digestive system, as it maintains healthy and frequent bowel movements.

Our daily intake of fiber, however, may not always be enough to maintain a healthy digestive system. Fiber functions by helping food move through the digestive system to make stools easier to pass, while also regulating its frequency. Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) proposed a recommended dietary fiber intake of 25-38 grams, but according to available local data, it has been indicated that the average diet of Malaysians contains only about 19 grams of total dietary fiber. Therefore, in order for the average Malaysian to meet WHO’s recommendation, they will need to consume almost twice as much food as they usually do.

Natural and Gentle

As part of the ‘Gentle is Good’ campaign, Abbott announced the availability of Surbex Nutri-Fiber in Malaysia. Surbex Nutri-Fiber contains natural form of dietary fiber to help address low fiber food intake in the country. It is especially helpful for people who suffer from chronic constipation, as Surbex Nutri-Fiber also serves as a long-term solution in regulating and maintaining bowel movements. When used in tandem with an osmotic laxative, such as lactulose, Surbex Nutri-Fiber can be greatly beneficial in promoting good bacteria in digestive system for better gut health.

The efficacy of Surbex Nutri-Fiber was tested in several clinical studies. One study found it to be highly tolerable with no symptoms or side effects such as bloating, gas or cramping pain when taken up to 45 grams per day. Another study concluded that Surbex Nutri-Fiber has prebiotic properties which can induce beneficial effects on the colonic environment, and consuming 15 grams per day was also proven to increase faecal enzyme activities. Moreover, Surbex Nutri-Fiber was shown to increase faecal excretion by 10 percent, which is a beneficial effect for constipation.

About “Gentle is Good”

As consuming fiber relieves the symptoms of constipation, the ‘Gentle is Good’ campaign along with consumption of Surbex Nutri-Fiber will ensure optimum dietary fiber intake. Through the campaign, Abbott also provides advice and product information to the public and encourages Malaysians to use gentle and effective ways to improve dietary fiber intake.
