The must-have holiday trip!
Our stay was booked from 24 September to 27 September 2017. We drove from Petaling Jaya to Cherating Beach, Kuantan on a gruelling, yet rewarding distance within a span of 3 hours+. The road to Cherating was rather smooth, with minimal traffic congestion.
Once Google Maps indicated that we were near the resort, my partner and I could not be more excited, especially to catch a glimpse of the beach of course. However, the Club Med Resort is indeed a hidden oasis within the quiet and humble town of Cherating. We drove pass quite a long stretch of \'kampong-like\' houses and make-shift food stalls before we reached a small (insignificant) signboard that guided us to the little turning in order to reach Club Med Cherating Beach. We decided to turn into the small junction as directed by the signboard and after not more than 2-3KM, we finally arrived at our much anticipated destination.
A security guard greeted and inspected our vehicle upon arrival as I was asked to present a printed copy of my reservation email. While waiting for verification, we noticed the astounding blue waters and even a cruise ship atop the vast ocean-like waters. We\'ve been to a few prominent beaches within Malaysia before, but Cherating Beach has got to be on the top of the list for its clear, crisp waters and untouched beauty of nature surrounding its property.
Once verified, we were guided by the security guard to park our car in the parking lots allocated within the premises. There were a few parking spaces labelled with property belonging to Club Med long before we reached the reception area, thus we were not sure which one was the nearest to the resort. With that said, we decided to follow another car which looked like it was about to head on into the reception area too, so we tail-gated the driver.
Upon reaching the reception area, we could immediately see the whole architecture was inspired closely based on traditional Malay-oriented houses. The buildings were made beautifully from teak wood, etched with workmanship that was made for guests to immerse fully into traditional Malaysian roots surrounded by the lush tropical forest.
We drove our car into the driveway where a Club Med staff (also known as G.O) greeted us and handed over a piece of paper stating our room number and departure date. He also assigned us to the nearest parking area allocated just around the corner of the resort. Our parking space was labelled \'Bintan\'. It was then when I noticed that the other parking area lots that I saw while driving to the reception area was named after all the Club Med Resorts found around the world.
After parking our car, we walked into the resort on foot and was greeted once again by the same G.O. He led us into the resort where a welcome drink and cold towels were kindly prepared for us after a gruelling drive. He (the G.O) introduced himself to us and quickly gave the two of us a short introduction on what to expect for our 4D3N stay. After that, it was check-in!
I must be honest, the rooms were relatively far from the whole resort; - rooms are segregated from the main restaurant, pool area, lounge, bar, etc...So as to avoid disturbances and loud music at night. We were also told not to feed the monkeys, monitor lizards or any wild animals we may stumble upon during our trip. Our room was located two floors up, which we had to use flights of stairs in order to reach it (there is minimal use of technology in this resort, so there was no elevators present) plus don’t expect good wifi line here. It was weak throughout the stay. It was surely a good thing that I did not bring a heavy luggage with me as it would have been tiring to bring it all the way up those flights of stairs. Phew!
My first impression of the room was that it was meant to be set in a cosy setting, with much as the elements of nature included in it. However, my first viewpoint was definitely a little underwhelming. The room looked old, with stains on the bedsheets and linens, and bathroom tiles looked worn out and outdated. The room also felt drafty, which made the room slightly hot and damp at times since the air-conditioning was centralised. What I don\'t see often was also the bathroom being separated into a different room from the toilet area. The toilet was located in an opposite room adjacent to where the bathroom and sink was. The structure of this layout reminded me of the rooms I stayed when I visited Europe.
In my observation, the wooden floorings and furnishings in the room definitely needs some sprucing up. There were a number of times when I heard the floors squeak and I would get frightened that it would suddenly collapse or one of the tiles might break into half since it was made entirely out from wood (LOL). However, considering the activities lined-up for guests to participate and enjoy, I believe the rooms were there just to accommodate a good night\'s rest when the sun sets and when all the activities came to a halt.
After quickly unloading our belongings, my partner and I quickly got changed into our swimsuits and headed out to get a quick snack at Club Med\'s Noodle Bar (also known as ENAK Restaurant). Here, a selection of noodles is blanched on the spot for guests with a selection of noodle broths such as chicken broth, miso broth and curry broth. The selection of noodles were also not the usual kinds you would find like bihun and kuey teow. The noodles offered were spinach noodles, charcoal noodles and thick udon noodles to customize with your broth of choice.
As we did not have lunch, I decided to choose the mildest on the menu; spinach noodles with chicken broth. The broth was a little too mild for my liking as I prefer a robust and wholesome chicken broth with strong chicken flavour to match. The broth to me was bland. My partner on the other hand chose charcoal noodles with miso soup. He noted that the taste of his broth was too overpowering with miso which can get unpleasant after drinking too much as it was rather concentrated and salty. However, we were both famished and craving for something warm in our tummies thus we did not care much for the taste. Also, best part? A selection of soft drinks and beer was offered to guests on a free-flow basis!
Next up, the Zen Pool, the much awaited activity just by looking at pictures prior to our trip. However, the pool is on a separate location which guests had to wait on a timely schedule for a train shuttle to arrive for pick-up. The drive would take up to 5-6 minutes, with a 30 minute interval back and fro. Upon arrival, you could ideally choose to head to the beach and enjoy a suntan, or you could head to the Zen Pool or indulge in water sports like sailing or kayaking.
The Zen Pool was gorgeous. The layout of the pool was overlooking the beautiful beach and sands where we could observe other guests partaking in the sailing activity and kayaking mid-afternoon. There were also ample patio chairs and even tanning beds for guests to relax and enjoy the sun, sea and breeze. What\'s more is that a drinks bar is also readily available for you whenever you\'re feeling parched.
My partner and I indulged in the waters to relax our tired minds and bodies. Do note that the waters were unpleasant when I tried swimming as it was salty as seawater. The waters underneath were also murky and had a lot of sand, leaves and dirt swimming underneath.
After spending about one and a half hours in the Zen Pool, we decided to head out to catch the shuttle train to get ready for dinner. But before that, we made a quick stop at the main bar (Orchid Bar) in front of the main restaurant (Mutiara). I decided to order a cocktail of the day and my partner a drink of his choice.
Note: The Orchid Bar does not offer fresh fruit juices, but concentrated cordials. Ideally, you would want to pick something that you’re familiar with, but do not be disappointed if the drink does not turn out to be what you expect to taste like. The bartenders are busy round the clock despite peak or non-peak times of the day, so do be patient while waiting for your order of drinks. Most alcoholic drinks served here are also customized to your liking on a free-flow basis and non-alcoholic cocktails are also available for kids.
While we were getting ready for dinner and showering, we were thankful that the water heater in our room was working fine despite the reviews of some who encountered water shortages and malfunctioning heaters. Body wash, shampoo, conditioner and hand soap were provided, however, toothbrushes and toothpaste were not included. Acknowledging this before we packed for our trip, we managed to bring our own.
Dinner started at 6.45PM at the main restaurant called Mutiara, which was where all our main meals would be served. Overlooking the main pool which illuminated during night time was a scenery so tranquil and pleasant while having our dinner.
Mutiara Restaurant served fresh, delicious, humble yet home-cooked dishes that did not taste like it was made in an industrialised kitchen. Our first dinner was served with an array of international cuisine starting from Chinese, Indian, Moroccan, French, Korean and Japanese. I really enjoyed the variety being offered with such heartiness and wholesomeness to every dish I tried. Whether it’s authentic egg curry to lamb cutlets, fresh grilled salmon or even Indian breads and tapas, you are guaranteed to satisfy your cravings by the end of the night. The dessert corner was basic, but done perfectly well to satiate even the most picky eaters.
From biscuits to cakes, bread puddings and French eclairs, the spread was simply mouth-watering. Not forgetting the fundamentals of fruits being offered too. The freshest and sweetest pineapple I ever tasted, papayas, honeydew and watermelon were offered every night. There were also a few other whole fruit options that could be sliced for guests on the spot such as pears, apples and oranges. Even fresh and ripened bananas in the morning.
Besides, the more refined restaurant that Club Med was proud of was the Rembulan restaurant where you can enjoy exquisite French fare dining on a three course meal. This part is the tedious one as we had to wake up early at 8.30a.m and make reservations through the main restaurant (Mutiara) to avoid missing out. Sure enough, by 9.30, it was fully booked. So, at the second night of our stay, we hopped on the train and headed with enthusiasm. The GO’s were kind and friendly, greeting everyone to their seats and explaining the menu for tonight (it rotates every day). We were served smoked duck, tuna tartare, butter-glazed prawns and juicy medium-rare steaks which were the highlights. Desserts and the soups were sub-par, but it truly proved to be a romantic occasion overlooking the vast beach. Opt for the outside seating for the full experience!
Next was the night show. Held every night at 9.15PM at the main stage, the nightly entertainment is curated and produced by the Club Med G.Os in attempt to entertain guests every night. The first night show that we got to see was Sports Comedy. The show lasted about 30-40 minutes long with slight intervals in-between. After that, there was a Sports Carnival held outside the stage area where various mini-games for kids and adults alike got to partake in. Guests had to earn a number of stickers from each station in order to retrieve a small gift from the token station afterwards. The gifts were primarily for children, where stickers, coloured pencils and notebooks could be redeemed for an exchange of a certain amount of stickers in return. All-day, the bar could be seen swarming with locals and international patrons redeeming the drinks of their choice. Kids were also seen redeeming the non-alcoholic ones with the help from their parents.
The rest of the days of our stay was pretty much filled with outdoor and indoor activities like kayaking, basketball, table tennis, gym and swimming at the main pool. What’s more is the small walk to the turtle sanctuary where we could see various turtle species and their eggs. For a more in-depth experience, they offer you a paid excursion to see turtles lay their eggs at night, but due to time shortage, we couldn’t manage. They also have many other excursions to different parts of Malaysia, so do take a look. I really liked that the beach was kept in pristine condition with little to no rubbish thrown all over. No plastic bottle caps or plastic bags hidden under the sand or around the premises of the resort here, meaning being barefoot is more than welcomed.
The Club Med G.Os were also very thorough and informative when they took the initiative to inform us of whether the water activities could be done as they had to calculate the speed and consistency of wind, etc…thus, it was helpful for fellow newbies like ourselves who were way too eager to join in the fun like the rest of the guests there. Hence, activities like sailing are very much dependent on the weather and unlucky for us, there was no wind on the day we tried. We couldn’t try the treetop activities (adults and kids are given different schedules so it’s pretty tight when other activities clash) nor the rock climbing which was under construction. If you’re one who likes the beach to enjoy a suntan, the weather in Cherating Beach is the place to be. Throughout our stay, the sun was consistently strong, and the skies clear. For a while we couldn’t believe that we were actually in Malaysia, since the region I stay is always raining and drizzling year round.
Last thing to note, bring your kids here! The GO’s are well trained and adept to care for your children. Plus, we continuously saw how much activities and cool stuff they got to play and learn. Plus, they got to steal the show on the second night with their own performance. Must be a proud sight for mums and dads to see for sure. Another tip here is that there are two shows each night; one main one and the other a club-style partying, so it can get noisy at night. Check out their schedule of shows to note what might interest you as we missed out on the Circus shows unfortunately.
As a whole, our first Club Med experience has thirst us wanting more. With perspectives changed over the course of 4 days, our stay was indeed memorable and tiring. Our trip to Club Med Cherating may have ended, but more adventures await. There are plenty more pictures but the max file size to upload is full. Thank you 100Comments for presenting us this opportunity for this luxurious stay! Our hearts are full.

This is something one just have to watch. Out of 1,000 eggs only one will become a grown up turtle! It is quite something you see and never will forget! The Club Med resort organised this tour. Another tour to go on, and which you cannot really do in that many places, is going out on a boat (that takes around 20 people) seeing the fire flies! The river looks like a river in the Amazon! The vegetation on both side of the river have small look a like Christmas lights.........which of course is not any decorations or lamps at all! Once the driver turns off his engine all these fire flies leave their trees and vegetation and they all came and sat on us all in the boat! Some in our hair, jackets, shoulders and hands! Amazing! That is probably how a Christmas tree must feel like! I had my hands open and a few landed on them and I could carefully touch these fire flies. Something you should not miss when you are at Cherating Beach. As at other Club Meds there are shows/entertaining every evening by the ever so skilled staff. The food is out of this world with chefs from all different countries serving up their special dishes. One certainly does not need to go to bed hungry or thirsty here! Beside the entertaining life guards, with their water guns (to scare the monkeys away that were too curious of what I had in my bag and what book I was reading!) there is also a visit to the turtle sanctuary. You can visit it at any time but if you go there with Una you learn a lot about turtles. She knows her turtles! Also there is a jungle walk that Una does every afternoon at 4. Get your sport shoes on and join in! It is a walk up a hill, 100 m above sea level, and the view over the South China Sea and the Club Med resort is fabulous! After the walk you end up at the other side of the resort where the accessible beach and the zen pool area is. You can either take the 'mini train' back to the resort which only is a 10 mins ride or walk back on a path surrounded by lush green vegetation.
This resort is truly a magic place to be at and in the jungle. Loved my 6 days there, August 2017, and I have already booked a trip back, so guys be prepared I am coming back!
