Kuala Lumpur, 26 November 2025 — Several states across Malaysia are experiencing severe flooding following continuous monsoon rainfall. In response to the escalating situation, Alpro Pharmacy, the nation’s largest prescription pharmacy chain, is extending support to affected communities. To ensure that chronic disease patients do not face dangerous interruptions to their treatment, Alpro Pharmacy and Alpro ePharmacy have activated the Life-Saving Medication Care Programme, which provides a one-time supply of up to seven days of chronic medication at no cost to verified flood victims. The initiative is fully subsidised by the Alpro Foundation, in line with its mission of Bringing Hope, Changing Lives.

According to Pharmacist Lim En Ni, Chief Pharmacist and Director of Engagement at Alpro Pharmacy, flood conditions bring a heightened risk of infectious diseases as well as complications for patients with long-term illnesses. “When floodwaters rise, the risks of leptospirosis, cholera, dengue and various skin infections increase significantly due to contaminated water, reduced sanitation and the rapid breeding of mosquitoes. At the same time, patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart conditions are at much higher risk if their treatment is disrupted. It is vital for them to remain on their medications,” she said.

Leptospirosis spreads through water contaminated with animal urine and can lead to fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle aches. Cholera, caused by contaminated food or water, may result in severe dehydration within hours if untreated. Flooded areas also create stagnant pools that accelerate the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, increasing the risk of dengue. Long exposure to dirty floodwater can also cause fungal infections and skin inflammation.

Pharmacist Lim advised the public to stay alert for symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, headaches, rashes or sudden weakness. She emphasised the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if any symptoms appear. “Early action can prevent serious complications. During a disaster, recognising symptoms quickly is extremely important,” she added.

With many families forced to evacuate without the chance to collect essential belongings, including important medications, Alpro Pharmacy activated the Life-Saving Medication Care Programme to ensure continuity of care. Flood victims who require chronic medication may visit any of Alpro Pharmacy’s 300 outlets nationwide. A police report regarding the flood incident is required for verification. For individuals who have misplaced or lost their prescriptions, Alpro ePharmacy will provide complimentary online consultation and e-prescription services to facilitate the provision of their medication supply. All medication support under this initiative is funded by the Alpro Foundation.

“Access to medication is a basic need for chronic patients, particularly during emergencies like this,” Pharmacist Lim said. “The Alpro Foundation is committed to supporting communities in crisis, and our role as a community pharmacy is to ensure patients continue their treatment safely, consistently and without financial burden.
