Drowning has become a critical concern in Malaysia, particularly among children, as the nation witnesses an alarming rise in cases of children drowning in swimming pools and other bodies of water. There is an urgent need for greater awareness, while safety measures, and necessary education of water safety skills are immediate requirements to safeguard the lives of Malaysia’s young generation.

Recent Cases Are Truly Heartbreaking
On October 25th this year, two brothers aged 7 and 9 years were found drowned after falling into a drain while playing near a village in Tanjong Karang, Selangor. Earlier in the same month, a 15-month toddler had drowned after the tricycle he was on, had fallen into an irrigation canal in Bachok, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. In September, the drowning of a two-year-old toddler, whose body was found floating in a drain, made headlines nationwide. Earlier in May, a father and two of his children were discovered drowned when their weekend outing at Sungai Balak, Selangor took a terrifying turn resulting in the loss of their lives. The cause for concern is that the drowning fatalities among children over the years have seen little reduction. Hence, the need for preventive measures and water safety education in Malaysia is nothing short of urgent and the nationwide awareness in teaching water safety skills for children is essential.
