My Baby Has A Fever!

While your baby is growing up, there are bound to be bouts of illnesses to get through. One of the most worrying situations for a new parent is when a little baby has a fever.

A fever indicates that your baby’s body is fighting any of the following:

  • A cold
  •  A flu
  •  Sore throat
  •  Ear infection
  •  Urinary tract infection
  •  Respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis
  •  A virus that causes roseola, chickenpox or hand, foot and mouth disease.

It is fairly unusual for young babies to develop a high fever, so this can be a warning sign that something is wrong.

Contact your doctor straight away if your baby is:

  •  Under three months and has a temperature of 38°C or more;
  •  Under six months and has a temperature of 39°C or more.

Taking your baby’s temperature

Use an appropriate thermometer to take your baby’s temperature. Most are easy to use and have clear instructions. There are different types to choose from:

Digital thermometers: These are accurate and beep when they are ready. Tuck it under your baby’s armpit, with baby’s arm down by the side.

Ear thermometers: For the most accurate readings and may take only a second.

Forehead strips: These are less accurate as they show the temperature of your baby’s skin, rather than the body.

Treating your baby’s fever

A baby’s fever is usually treatable at home.

Here are some ways to keep your baby comfortable and speed up recovery:

  •  Make sure baby is well hydrated with regular breastfeeds. If baby is on formula milk, make sure to offer extra cooled boiled water.
  •  Do not force-feed a sick baby. Instead, try to offer small amounts regularly to keep energy up.
  •  Let your baby rest if that is what he wants. Remember, your little one would much rather be up and about if he was feeling well
  •  Use comfortable and light clothing for your baby for optimal comfort.
  •  If your child is three months or older, you may offer the recommended dosage of infant paracetamol or ibuprofen. Follow the dosage instructions on the packet or ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have doubts.
