Betacarotene is converted into vitamin A as required by the body and is essential for the healthy function of the body’s skin and mucous membranes especially those of the eye. The amount of betacarotene absorbed and converted to vitamin A depends on the individual’s vitamin A status, betacarotene body stores, and the amount of betacarotene ingested. The amount of betacarotene converted to vitamin A decreases when body stores are full.
